How to Make & Use a Calendar Binder

Each day we start our math lessons by working in our calendar binder. Here is how to make and use a calendar binder.

So I purchased a 1/2" white binder with a clear front in which you can slide paper into to make a cover. I printed this cover from Mama Jenn's calendar page.

The very first page inside is a calendar of the current month for Little Bill to fill in. I print these from Education World, where you can find a new one for each month. At the start of each month, I have Bill fill in the numbers in the squares and color the picture. Each day Bill puts a sticker on today, making a different pattern with the stickers each month.

The next page is one that teaches how to write the date. In the first column, the child completes the sentence "Today is" by writing the day of the week. In the next column, the child is to write out the complete date (i.e. August 29, 2010). In the final column, the child writes the date in code (i.e. 8-29-10). We do this each day. You can find the page to print at Mama Jenn's calendar page as well.

Next up, we make the date (the 29th) with coins (adding up to 29 cents). I have put a baseball-card-holding clear plastic binder page in to use with this activity. I also put a blank sheet of white paper behind it since the pockets are see-through. You can find the money activity printables at . . . you guessed it! Mama Jenn's calendar page.

The next page is a weather graph that we fill in each day. I explain "cloudy" to mean that the clouds are blocking the sunlight. This way, its not confusing as to whether a day fits in to "sunny" or "cloudy" or both. Over time, as the page fills, we read the graph and discuss results, such as what kind of weather do we have more than any other? I will replace this page as needed when it becomes too full. This weather graph printable comes from J Meacham.

The next page I somehow missed when photographing, but it is a 100 chart, on which we color a number each day for how many days of school we have completed. The printable comes from 1+1+1=1.

On the final page, we reinforce place value by making the day we are on in the 100 days of school with number cards. Again, I used a baseball-card-holding clear plastic binder page to slide the number cards into. I also used a blank sheet of paper behind it since it is clear. These cards can be printed from Mama Jenn's calendar page.

We do each of these activities daily to start off our math lessons, and any other activities we do will be posted in each day's math section.
